Canaletto brings Venice to life on canvas in Brooks exhibit

"Venice in the Age of Canaletto," an exhibition featuring works by the master painter of 18th century Venetian life, opens on Sunday for display through May 9 at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. The exhibit comprises about 50 items, mostly paintings but also pieces of furniture and decorative objects such as the spectacular "Dessert Decoration in the Form of a Glass Garden," circa 1760. In the November issue of Memphis magazine, we tell the dramatic story of the strange events that took place at the Memphis Academy of Arts from 1969 to 1971, when certain people here objected rather strongly to the school's use of nudes, and an exhibition of nude photography. The result was death threats, car bombs, even a kidnapping. It's on newsstands now. Buy a copy. I mean it ... But the art academy (now known as Memphis College of Art) wasn't the only victim of this outrageous behavior.

'Nuts! Over Art' cracks open new festival in Overton Park

You go to an art museum to view art, right? Saturday night people went to Memphis Brooks Museum of Art to dance, sing karaoke, have their fortunes told, watch a magic show, smoke cigars and view a burlesque show. They also could view "The Prints of Jacob Lawrence." The event was the Avant-Garde Party 2009.
