Edith Moore wins commission seat; Justin Ford loses, but it ain't over yet ... by Jackson Baker ... Much has been made of the fact that there is suddenly to be a gap in the consecutive service on the Shelby County Commission of members surnamed Ford. Certainly that was the immediate consequence of Monday's vote on a successor to Joe Ford, who was sworn in as interim county mayor earlier this month. The surprise victory of the unheralded Edith Moore on the sixth ballot over interim mayor Ford's
by Flyer Staff ... The year ends with the Memphis City Council playing what appears to be a game of Russian roulette with the issue of funding for Memphis City Schools. When a council majority last week rejected Mayor A C Wharton's call for a 31-cent tax increase to comply with a judicial order to fund Memphis City Schools, it could propose no clear alternative — other than the time-dishonored one of eliminating waste and cutting-to-the-bone and all that. The South Intermodal Terminal will be home to Greyhound's Memphis operations and a small MATA customer service center, as well as a stop on about five local bus routes. The project is connected
The federal grand jury investigating former Memphis mayor Willie Herenton disbanded Wednesday without returning an indictment. The grand jury completes its two-year term at the end of the month and has no more hearing dates ...
So the shaggy dog story goes on. No indictment now, but… who knows, maybe later. Maybe next year with a new Grand Jury, maybe even — at inexplicable last — with a new U.S. Attorney. (What’s Obama waiting on? The results of the 2010 midterm election?) ... Next year… Except, hold on, next year is when the race for the 9th District congressional seat is scheduled. Let’s face it: It’s always been an iffy thing. Anybody seen any Herenton-for-Congress paraphernalia? Gone to one of the
