If you’ve been a regular at FedExForum this winter, you know some of the biggest cheers heard at Tiger games are those for buckets scored by Memphis senior Pierre Henderson-Niles. A converted layup. A made free throw. The crowd ROARS in appreciation ... The sad truth, though, is that the converted baskets were applauded because there were considered rarities by those familiar with watching Henderson-Niles play ... Larry Kuzniewski Pierre Henderson-Niles ... The big center was dismissed from
I took my family to this afternoon’s game, my daughters’ first in two years. (Now and then, you gotta leave the notebook and recorder at home.) Among the questions I heard today that I never do on press row: “Why are all those people reading newspapers?” (It was during the pregame introduction of the Gonzaga starting lineup.) “How many of these [foil strands] are on my pom-pom?” ... Reminded me what’s important, even on game day ... The Tigers had a chance to pull the upset today,
• This interregional series began during the 2005-06 season, the aim being to get two of the best programs outside the six major conferences on the same floor. A member of the West Coast Conference, Gonzaga has won at least 23 games every season since coach Mark Few took over the program for the 1999-2000 campaign. Senior tailback Curtis Steele earned first-team all-conference honors today in voting by Conference USA coaches. Steele rushed for 1,239 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, the highest totals for Memphis in either category since DeAngelo Williams last suited up in 2005. He reeled off six 100-yard games (including a pair of 200-yard outbursts). Steele finished his two-year Tiger career ranked third in rushing (behind Williams and Dave Casinelli) with 2,462 yards. He was a second-team selection
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles don't exactly roll off the tongue when you consider the Tigers' historical rivals. But for 30 years (starting with the 1931-32 season and ending in 1960-61), these teams typically played twice each winter. The most significant Tiger win came on March 4, 1952, a victory that earned Memphis the NAIB state championship (and qualified them to play in the NAIB national tournament, where they lost in the second round) ... When the annual series was discontinued after
There was nothing automatic about tonight's Opening Night win over the Southwestern Athletic Conference's favorite Tigers. It may have been a life-changer for rookie head coach Josh Pastner — "I'm only 799 behind Jim Boeheim," he cracked after the game — but it was no automatic win. With seven scholarship players in his rotation, and only two players you'd classify as "big men," Pastner will count the wins from his first season in the big chair like a 2008 stock broker counted his coins.
